Biography

Wilson Lumpkin rose from humble beginnings to serve Georgia as a U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator, and two-term governor, championing infrastructure, education, and the expansion of the state's institutions. His work to strengthen the state's financial foundations and to shepherd the growth of railroads helped lay the groundwork for generations to come.

In private life he remained devoted to the fertile hills around Oconee Hill Cemetery, where neighbors remember him as a thoughtful patriarch who believed in the promise of the new republic.
