Biography

Zachary Lansdowne devoted himself to naval aviation, championing the potential of lighter-than-air craft to extend the reach of the United States Navy. He brought steady leadership and technical skill to the airship program, balancing daring flights with meticulous attention to the safety of his crew.

While commanding USS Shenandoah, he guided the rigid airship through demanding operations until a storm over Ohio in 1925 claimed his life along with several shipmates; his legacy endures in the courage he displayed while opening new horizons for naval aviation and in the memories honored at Arlington.
