Biography

Alexander Cartwright (1820-1892) helped codify the New York rules that shaped modern baseball, emphasizing fair play, safe conduct, and shared stewardship of the game; his name is honored among those credited with laying the groundwork for America’s pastime. He later moved to Oʻahu, where he served as a civic leader and fire department officer.

His passion for orderly play and community involvement carried on through coaching youth and championing public service, and he is buried with affection at Oʻahu Cemetery.
