John Papa Īī

Biography

John Papa Īī, born in 1800, served as a chief in the courts of successive Hawaiian monarchs and became a vital keeper of Hawaiian history. His recollections and writings offer an intimate portrait of the kingdom’s customs, governance, and the people he served.
