Biography
Almon Harris Thompson devoted his life to the careful measurement and mapping of the American West, serving as chief topographer for the Wheeler Survey and later as a guiding force within the U.S. Geological Survey.
He combined scientific rigor with a calm leadership that helped place countless communities, mountains, and watercourses on the nation’s maps, and his work is commemorated by the honored ground at Arlington National Cemetery.
