Biography

August Kautz (1828–1895) became known as a resolute cavalry officer who distinguished himself during the Civil War and in subsequent campaigns on the western frontier. His command of mounted troops, particularly during daring reconnaissance and raids, exemplified a combination of tactical boldness and attention to the welfare of his men.

After the war he applied that same discipline to overseeing frontier operations, earning the admiration of fellow soldiers, and he was laid to rest with honor at Arlington National Cemetery, a fitting place for a tireless defender of the nation.
