Benjamin Franklin Tilley (1848–1907) upheld the maritime traditions of the Navy, balancing readiness and diplomacy during the formative years after the Civil War.

Trusted by his sailors for fairness and calm command, he is remembered today at the United States Naval Academy Cemetery.
