Clement Comer Clay

Biography

Clement Comer Clay, born in 1789, devoted decades to serving Alabama, including terms as governor and United States senator, while also representing his state in diplomatic matters. A skilled legislator, he worked to balance state and federal concerns during the nation’s early growth.

After his public career he remained a steady counselor to younger leaders and continued to live in service to his community until his death in 1866. He is buried at Maple Hill Cemetery, where his legacy of integrity in public life is remembered.
