Biography
Daniel Butterfield combined talent for leadership with deep concern for the men he commanded, serving with distinction as a Union general and leaving his mark on military tradition through the enduring tribute of the "Taps" bugle call.
After the war he continued to serve the country in public and financial roles, and he now rests at West Point Cemetery, remembered for both battlefield valor and compassionate stewardship.
