Biography
Elmer Fowler Stone joined the United States Coast Guard as it was formalizing its aviation capabilities and became the service's first designated aviator, learning to fly seaplanes even as the Navy explored the new branch of service. His technical skill and patience with crews helped the Coast Guard demonstrate that aircraft could extend the reach of rescue and patrol missions.
Stone went on to lead early Coast Guard air stations, training the aviators who would follow him and refining procedures for searching vast stretches of ocean, ensuring that the new arm of the service remained focused on saving lives. His pioneering work bridged the navy and the cutters, earning him respect from both communities after a decade of demanding flying experience.
