Biography

Fernando E. Rodríguez Vargas, a proud son of Puerto Rico, trained as a dentist and brought his talents to the Army Dental Corps, where he played key roles during World War I by treating soldiers and strengthening the corps's professionalism. He combined his clinical care with a passion for research, determined to ease the suffering caused by dental disease.

Rodríguez Vargas is remembered for identifying the bacteria linked to dental caries and for advocating preventive programs that benefited both soldiers and civilian communities, particularly in Puerto Rico; his work paved the way for better oral health practices in the military and beyond. Even after illness cut his career short, the improvements he championed continued to resonate in public health efforts.
