1881–1918 (age 37)
U.S. Marine
Biography
Fred William Stockham, born in 1881, answered the call to serve his country as a U.S. Marine in the years before the United States entered the First World War. He quickly rose to the rank of sergeant, earning the trust of his comrades with his calm leadership and willingness to shoulder the burdens of the unit in the face of hardship.
During the spring of 1918 he was recognized for conspicuous gallantry while tending wounded Marines near Belleau Wood, refusing to leave a brother in arms despite the danger; the Medal of Honor was posthumously awarded in gratitude for that ultimate sacrifice, and his memory endures among the families he protected.
