Biography

Frederic Edwin Church was a towering figure of the Hudson River School whose expansive landscapes captured the spirit of the American wilderness. From his early studies under Thomas Cole to his celebrated canvases of the Andes, Niagara Falls, and the Arctic, Church brought a rare combination of scientific curiosity and lyrical grandeur to the depiction of light, atmosphere, and geological detail.

In later years he welcomed guests to Olana, his Persian-inspired home and studio overlooking the Hudson Valley, where he continued to find inspiration and to support aspiring artists. He remains remembered not only for his luminous works but also for his generous spirit, his appreciation of the natural world, and his calm presence among the families who now keep his memory at Spring Grove Cemetery.
