Biography
Helen Strong Carter, daughter of industrialist Henry A. Strong and wife of Territorial Governor George R. Carter, embraced her role as Hawaii's first lady with gentle leadership and cultural sensitivity. She championed healthcare improvements, educational opportunities for Native Hawaiian children, and the preservation of the islands' traditions, welcoming citizens into the governor's house for celebrations rooted in aloha.
After her husband's passing she continued to support the Red Cross, relief societies, and causes that strengthened families, sustaining friendships across the islands and keeping the spirit of community alive. Her memory rests at Oahu Cemetery, where visitors recall the poise with which she served the people of Hawaii.
