James Goodwin Batterson

Biography

James Goodwin Batterson (1823-1901) rose from stonemasonry roots to become a leading businessman, founding the Travelers Insurance Company and guiding its growth into a firm respected for both its integrity and innovation. He also oversaw monumental work that left a lasting imprint on civic architecture and public spaces across the country.

His philanthropic spirit and attention to public memorials are remembered at Cedar Hill Cemetery, where he lies among the city leaders he helped to shape.
