Biography

Julius Stahel emigrated from Hungary after the 1848 revolution and soon established himself as a Union cavalry officer, rising to brigadier general and earning the Medal of Honor for leading a daring charge at the Battle of New Market Heights. His leadership in the Shenandoah Valley and later on inspection duties reflected a deep commitment to the Union cause.

After the war he continued to serve the country in public capacities, including diplomatic and civil service roles, bringing the same discipline and measured judgment to those duties.
