Biography
Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard rose from West Point engineer to commanding general of the Confederacy's armies, asserting command at Fort Sumter and leading the South in its early victories while always seeking to shield civilians from the ravages of war.
After the conflict he returned to New Orleans, assisted with railroads and public works, advocated for reconciliation, and remained active with veterans’ groups until his passing; his legacy endures in the city he served and in the quiet dignity of the Metairie Cemetery grounds.
