Biography
Vivian Burey Marshall brought thoughtfulness and patriotism to every project she undertook, quietly guiding civic initiatives and nurturing the morale of those working for equality. As an educator and activist, she helped organize local efforts to expand opportunities for African Americans while balancing the demands of home life with the wider needs of the community.
The strength of her partnership with Thurgood Marshall was rooted in mutual respect and a shared belief in justice, and her early support helped sustain the young lawyer’s path toward landmark cases and, ultimately, a lifetime on the bench. When she died in 1955, colleagues remembered her for steadfast faith in the movement and a calming influence that buoyed friends through adversity.
