Biography
Włodzimierz Krzyżanowski (1824–1887) was a Polish-born engineer and patriot who made his home in the United States and joined the Union Army as a brigadier general. His leadership of volunteer units and his advocacy for immigrants reflected the ideals that brought him to this country—liberty, opportunity, and civic responsibility.
Krzyżanowski later served in various civil capacities, continuing to champion the interests of veterans and fellow immigrants. He rests at Arlington National Cemetery, a reminder of the contributions made by those who came from afar to serve the American cause.
