Biography

William Ludlow was born in 1843 and became one of the Army Corps of Engineers' most respected surveyors, leading expeditions such as the 1875 Yellowstone survey, publishing reports on geology and vegetation, and providing critical maps for the expanding nation.

His later work with river and harbor improvements and coastal defenses reflected a mind attuned to both exploration and engineering, and when he died in 1901 he was interred at Arlington National Cemetery among fellow builders of the Republic.
