Biography

William Mordecai Cooke Sr. was born in 1823 and established himself as a merchant during the antebellum period. His commercial activities contributed to the economic life of his community during the nineteenth century, a time of significant commercial expansion and development.

Cooke died in 1863 at the age of 40 and was interred at Calvary Cemetery. Though his life was cut short by the Civil War era, his legacy as a merchant reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of his generation and the commercial networks that sustained American communities during this period.
