Benjamin Franklin Butler, born in 1818, rose to national prominence as a general during the Civil War and later as a congressman and governor, earning attention for his legal acuity and tireless work on behalf of the Union.

He championed the rights of freedmen and kept the rule of law at the forefront of Reconstruction debates, and he now rests at Hildreth Family Cemetery, leaving behind a record of bold public service.
