Biography

Edwin Godwin Reade was born in 1812 and trained as a lawyer before serving the people of North Carolina in several legislative and judicial posts. He sat in the United States Congress and later accepted appointments on the state bench, where he was known for his measured decisions.

He retired after helping to guide the courts through a transformative decade and continued to offer wise counsel to civic leaders until his death in 1894. His work as a jurist and legislator is remembered as a steadying influence in Historic Oakwood Cemetery's honored ground.
