Biography

Elba Lightfoot answered the call of art early, lending her voice and brush to the vibrant Harlem scene and the broader movement to celebrate African American creativity. Her paintings, often reflecting the everyday lives of her neighbors, earned respect in both community-centered studios and citywide exhibitions, and she was a founding member of the Harlem Artists Guild.

Throughout her career she mentored younger artists, advocated for public support of the arts, and helped guide New York schools toward more inclusive curricula, leaving a legacy of empowerment that endures around her final resting place at Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum.
