Biography
Ellis Spear rose to prominence as a military officer, most notably commanding the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery during the Civil War and playing a crucial role in the final campaigns around Petersburg. His courage and steady hand in the face of intense pressure earned him the admiration of fellow soldiers.
After the war he remained engaged with veterans’ affairs and civic life, embodying the loyalty and resolve that guided so many officers of his era, and Arlington National Cemetery is the fitting place where his service is remembered.
