Biography
James Pickands was born in 1839 and co-founded Pickands, Mather & Company, which became a cornerstone of the Midwest iron and coal trade. His leadership in the resource industries helped fuel Cleveland’s growth and ensured employment for many working families, while he remained attentive to the welfare of his employees.
Beyond business, Pickands contributed to civic life with a sense of duty and philanthropy, believing that prosperity should benefit all neighbors. He lies at Lake View Cemetery, remembered not only for industrial achievements but also for the generosity he extended to the city he served.
