Biography
James Smith (1826–1881) was a military officer who answered the call to defend the Union and who offered thoughtful leadership to the soldiers under his charge. Known among his peers for care in preparing troops and for perseverance in the face of hardship, he helped preserve the cohesion of the forces he served.
Following the conclusion of the war he remained engaged with the defense of the nation, applying his experience to the evolving challenges of the postwar Army. He rests in Arlington National Cemetery, a lasting tribute to his commitment to country.
