Biography

John H. Martindale studied law in western New York and parlayed his legal mind into military leadership, rising to the rank of general during the Civil War, where he commanded brigades with steady discipline and a keen sense of fairness for the men under his command.

After the war he returned to Batavia, resuming his legal practice and guiding veterans and civic causes with the same sense of justice that marked his military service, leaving a memory of faithful stewardship in the community now honored at Batavia Cemetery.
