Biography
Leon Godchaux, an immigrant who became a leading sugar refiner, built his fortune on industry while employing thousands and showing a rare commitment to the welfare of his workers and the surrounding communities.
He devoted much of his later years to charity, endowing hospitals and schools and supporting Jewish and civic causes, leaving New Orleans enriched by both his industry and his generosity before his interment at Metairie Cemetery.
