Biography

Lucius Jeremiah Gartrell represented Georgia in the halls of Congress before taking up arms as a general in Confederate service, answering the call with the same sense of duty that had defined his political career. He was known for measured advocacy in the House and for the resolve he brought to the field.

Once the war ended, he returned to private law practice, applying his experience toward rebuilding civic life and mentoring new generations of Georgians. His grave in Oakland Cemetery is a quiet reminder of a man devoted to his state through peace and conflict alike.
