Pierce Butler

Biography

Pierce Butler (1744–1822) was a statesman whose decisions as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and the early Congress helped shape the balance between federal authority and states' rights.

He maintained his connection to Christ Church, Philadelphia, participating in its civic and spiritual life while working to sustain the institutions of the republic he helped establish.
