Biography

Prince Hall rose from his own experiences as a free black artisan to found African Lodge No. 1, the first African American Masonic lodge, and he tirelessly petitioned the Massachusetts legislature for equal rights while organizing mutual aid and schooling for black Bostonians.

His activism, eloquent petitions, and belief in self-help secured his place as a leader whose spirit of fraternity and justice continues to inspire Prince Hall Freemasons and civil rights advocates.
