Biography
Born in 1810, Roger N. Stembel joined the United States Navy as a young man and fought in the Mexican War before rising to command gunboats and blockading squadrons during the Civil War, carrying supplies and protecting Union shipping along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.
He remained in uniform after the conflict, advising on coastal defense and mentoring junior officers until his retirement, and in 1900 he was laid to rest among fellow servicemen at Arlington National Cemetery.
