Stephen Miller Foote

Biography

Stephen Miller Foote combined professional rigor with a deep concern for those around him, shepherding units through training and operations with a sense of fairness that inspired confidence. His service spanned a time of transition for the Army, and he approached each assignment with the deliberate care of an officer committed to his own learning as well as his responsibilities to others.

Foote’s friends remembered him as a man who listened before deciding, who respected the traditions of the service while embracing the innovations it required, and who invited others to do their best work. He now rests at Arlington National Cemetery, his contributions recorded by a grateful nation.
