Biography

William Pegram, born in 1841, graduated from the Virginia Military Institute and became one of the Army of Northern Virginia’s most daring artillery officers. Known for his sharp wit and tireless devotion to duty, he commanded batteries with a boldness that inspired his gunners and infantry alike.

He was mortally wounded during the fall 1865 fighting near Five Forks and died the following day. He rests in Hollywood Cemetery, remembered for his steadfastness and the loyal friendship he offered to those around him.
