Biography

Henry Clay Merriam, born in 1837, brought discipline and resolve to every campaign from the Civil War through the Indian Wars, earning the trust of men who relied on his tactical skill and measured temperament. He helped keep order on the Western frontier while fostering the professional growth of the Army.

Later commands saw him refine training and preparedness, setting the tone for the modern Regular Army, and his memory remains among the honored dead at Arlington National Cemetery.
