Biography

John J. Coppinger, born in 1834, took up arms with the Union at the start of the Civil War, rising through the volunteer ranks and later serving on frontier and staff assignments where his experience guided troops through reconstruction and Indian campaigns.

He remained a calming presence in the Army into the closing years of the century, and in 1909 he was interred at Arlington National Cemetery as a testament to his lifelong dedication.
