Biography

Lewis F. Powell Jr., born in 1907 in Virginia, rose to national prominence as a jurist whose intellect and collegial spirit helped shape American law for decades. After distinguished service in law, business, and on the U.S. Court of Appeals, he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1971, where he championed thoughtful compromise and the rule of law.
