Mayor
Biography
Ernest Nathan Morial emerged as a civil rights leader and, in 1978, became New Orleans' first African American mayor, bringing a sharp legal mind and deep commitment to justice to City Hall. Before that milestone he served as a judge and a vocal advocate for equitable opportunity, helping to transform municipal programs and expand minority participation in governance.
As mayor he championed economic development, infrastructure renewal, and neighborhood revitalization, all while encouraging civic pride and broadening access to city services; his influence continues to be felt by residents and visitors who pass the monuments near Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1 where he rests.
