Biography
Julia Gardiner Tyler, born in 1820 into a prominent New York family, became First Lady upon her marriage to President John Tyler in 1844, entering the White House at the height of her youth and guiding its social life with gracious hospitality after a series of personal losses.
She later returned to New York and continued to safeguard the Tyler legacy, championing historic preservation and devoting herself to the care and education of her extended family until her passing; she is remembered at Hollywood Cemetery.
